PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

Priest:

We have listened to the story of the Passion of the Lord. With sadness we look at the continued violence and sinfulness of our world. Christ’s final words from the cross were of forgiveness, so let us ask God to soften people’s hearts as we pray.

V

1. For Christian people everywhere (Pause)

At the beginning of this Holy Week, we pray for all our Christian brothers and sisters. May we follow the example of Jesus who emptied himself for us that we might learn to be of service to all. Lord, hear us.

2.For for those who suffer for what they believe (Pause).

We pray for those in our world who, like Jesus, are unjustly persecuted. By our prayers and actions, may we be in solidarity with them who suffer for justice and truth. Lord, hear us

3. For a sense of peace amidst suffering (Pause).

May we be granted the gift of inner peace when we experience pain at the hands of others. And may Christians everywhere support those who are suffering by our prayers and understanding love. Lord, hear us.

4. For a fruitful observance of Holy Week (Pause)

May we use this Holy Week profitably for reflection and prayer; for renewal and repentance; for acts of charity; for worship and sharing. Lord, hear us.

5. For the sick (Pause).

May the sick be well. We pray for Tom Hughes, Theresa Benson, Catherine Tomlin, Jim Walsh, Natasha Fitzpatrick, Francis Allen, Annie Nolan, Rose Wright, Philomena O’Hagan, Mark Turner, Freddie Fusco, Collin Lydon, Alice Mbeng Bessong, William Guckian, Nerville, Fred Osby-Darko, Pat Whitlock, Yris Alomajan, George Sidney Marks, Francis and Mary McGilligan, Maria Gordon, Micky Otoole, Chukuma Nwosu, Eileen Ruddy, Karen Kentish, Sharon McGilligan, Manuel Correia, Ricardo Feliciano, Margaret Ayo Francis and Shirley Kentish. Lord, hear us.

6. For the dead (Pause)

May the dead rise with Christ. We pray for Francisca Tuddao, Patrick & Frances McGilligan and Ladi Biriyok. Lord, hear us

Let us ask Mary, standing at the foot of the Cross, to teach us to forgive: Hail Mary…

Let us ask God in the silence of our own hearts to grant us his peace.

Priest;

God, our Father, there is much in the world that calls for remorse. Turn our remorse into sorrow, and our sorrow into joy at your forgiveness, which comes to us through Christ, who is Lord forever and ever.

Amen.

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

Priest:

“When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all men to myself.” Let us pray with confidence to God, since his care for his people is without limit.

V

1. For a desire to live as God wants (Pause)

“I will be their God; they will be my people”, says the Lord. May the new covenant that God has written on our hearts increase our desire to live as God wants by the commandments planted deeply within us. Lord, hear us.

2.For a deeper understanding of God’s purposes (Pause).

Jesus learned obedience through suffering and became the source of salvation for all. May we grow in accepting the mysterious purposes of God who brings resurrection out of suffering and death. Lord, hear us

3. For a rich harvest among God’s people (Pause).

We believe that the death of a single grain of wheat can yield a rich harvest. May we so die to self and live for others that the world may turn from selfishness and enjoy a harvest of peace and justice. Lord, hear us.

4. For a spirit of service (Pause)

May we be worthy disciples of Jesus, looking for ways to be of service in the community and in the Church, responding to those in need as the Lord showed in his life and his death. Lord, hear us.

Priest

VGod so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may live. Let us now, confident in God’s love, pray for the world he loved.

1. For a deeper faith in God’s activity in the world (Pause)

God inspired Cyrus, King of Persia, to console the Jewish people in their time of exile. May we renew our faith in God’s saving presence in our world. Lord, hear us.

2.For a greater awareness of God’s generous love (Pause).

We hope in God because God is faithful and we trust in God’s generous love that has saved us, in Christ. May we show forth God’s goodness in how we live and what we value. Lord, hear us

3. For a spirit of self giving (Pause).

Jesus gave himself for all of us when he was lifted up on the cross. May we share his spirit of self giving, overcoming the darkness of greed by the light of our own concern. Lord, hear us.

4. For an eagerness to walk in the light (Pause)

May we be a people who walk in the light of Christ, avoiding the darkness of sin and death; and may we grow in faith in Jesus, filled with the light that comes from God and living by the truth revealed in Christ. Lord, hear us.

5. For the sick (Pause).

May the sick be well again. We pray for Tom Hughes, Theresa Benson, Catherine Tomlin, Jim Walsh, Natasha Fitzpatrick, Francis Allen, Annie Nolan, Rose Wright, Philomena O’Hagan, Mark Turner, Freddie Fusco, Collin Lydon, Alice Mbeng Bessong, William Guckian, Nerville, Fred Osby-Darko, Pat Whitlock, Yris Alomajan, George Sidney Marks, Francis and Mary McGilligan, Maria Gordon, Micky Otoole, Chukuma Nwosu, Eileen Ruddy, Karen Kentish, Sharon McGilligan, Manuel Correia, Ricardo Feliciano, Margaret Ayo Francis and Shirley Kentish. Lord, hear us.

6. For the dead (Pause)

May the dead be raised. We remember Lorna Guckian and Joseph and Mary Dornan. Lord, hear us

We ask Mary to pray for us that we may learn to love her Son more. Hail Mary…

Let us now pray in silence to the God who is love.

Priest;

God our Father, look with love on all your children. May they never forget your constant care for them and the promise of your forgiveness, made known to us through Christ who is Lord forever and ever.

Amen.

Refrain
Taste and see, O taste and see,
taste and see the goodness of God.

1. Glory, glory to God most high,
glory, blessing and praise.
With one voice, O people,
rejoice in our God,
who hears the cry
of all in need.

2. Who has fashioned the earth and sky,
who created the deep,
who exalts the lowly
and sets captives free,
who opens the door
to all those who seek.

3. Oh, the love of God!
Become flesh of our flesh,
so that we might live in glory.

Letter from the Bishops

This weekend, we receive a letter from Archbishops Vincent Nichols and Peter Smith on behalf of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales. It is a statement of our Catholic faith about marriage and issued in the light of the forthcoming consultation by the Government on changing the legal definition of marriage. In the light of this letter, you are asked to consider signing the Coalition for Marriage’s online petition which can be found at www.C4M.org.uk . It reads:

“I support the legal definition of marriage which is the voluntary union of life of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others. I oppose any attempt to redefine it.”

A more detailed leaflet will be issued after Easter by the Archbishops on the Government’s consultation itself. This will help Catholics make up their own response to the consultation. A copy of the letter is at the back of the Church. Take one, please.

APRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

Priest

V”With God on our side, who can be against us/” Strengthened by God’s Word and with great confidence, let call upon Him in prayer.

1. For courage to be people of faith (Pause)

Abraham is our father in faith. May his desire to obey God strengthen us in this time of Lent to new resolutions of trust in God’s faithfulness and love. Lord, hear us.

2.For a spirit of thanks to God (Pause).

May we grow in understanding God’s gifts to the Church and to the world; and in this time of Lent give thanks for the gift of Jesus who pleads for us before God. Lord, hear us

3. For renewed commitment to Jesus (Pause).

In the tradition of Moses and Elijah, Jesus is both teacher and prophet. Following God’s command, may we learn to listen to the beloved Son that, like him, our lives may be transformed by God. Lord, hear us.

4. For delight in the presence of God (Pause)

Like peter and john, may we be filled with delight in the presence of God in our lives; and may we be renewed in our desire to live as disciples of God’s Son. Lord, hear us.

5. For health (Pause).

May the sick be well. We pray for Tom Hughes, Theresa Benson, Catherine Tomlin, Jim Walsh, Natasha Fitzpatrick, Francis Allen, Annie Nolan, Rose Wright, Philomena O’Hagan, Mark Turner, Freddie Fusco, Collin Lydon, Alice Mbeng Bessong, William Guckian, Nerville, Fred Osby-Darko, Pat Whitlock, Yris Alomajan, George Sidney Marks, Francis and Mary McGilligan, Maria Gordon, Micky Otoole, Chukuma Nwosu, Eileen Ruddy, Karen Kentish, Sharon McGilligan, Manuel Correia and Ricardo Feliciano. Lord, hear us.

6. For everlasting life (Pause

May the dead be raised to everlasting life. We pray for Darrell Serpis, John & Mary Hughes, Sr. Rose Juskiewics and Sean Connoly. Lord, hear us

Let us ask Mary to pray with us: Hail Mary…

Let us in silence remember all those for whom we have promised to pray.

Priest;

Lord Jesus, you are close to us always, and we know our true needs. May we stay in your presence, listen to you, and welcome your spirit. We make our prayer in your name, Jesus our Lord, for live and reign forever and ever.

1. The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want
I have everything that I need
Near to pastures green, by the cooling stream
Here he will revive my drooping spirit

Lord be my shepherd.
Let me be your sheep.
Even when I trail
Through the darkest vale
With his crook and staff, He gives me comfort

3. A banquet so fine he prepares for me
Where my enemies all can see
Holy oil to spread and anoint my head

4. His goodness and kindness shall follow me
And be with me, all my days
In his house devine, to the end of time
I will honour him forever more

1. As the deer pants for the water
So my soul longs after You
You alone are my hearts desire
And I long to worship You

You alone are my strength my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my hearts desire
And I long to worship You

2. You’re my friend and You are my brother,
Even though You are a king.
I love You more than any other,
So much more than anything.

3. I want You more than gold or silver,
Only You can satisfy.
You alone are the real joy Giver,
And the apple of my eye.

1.You laid aside Your majesty, gave up everything for me.
In heav’n and earth exalted.

So I lift my voice to You in adoration.

APRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

Priest

V”We have never seen anything like this.” God is our hope. He offers us forgiveness as soon as we turn back to him, provided we also forgive those who trespass against us. We turn to him now with our request.

1. For joy that our sins are forgiven (Pause)

God declares our sins are forgiven, refusing to recall our deeds in the past. May our joy in experiencing God’s forgiveness encourage us to avoid sin in our lives and to live by the commandments. Lord, hear us.

2.For those who are not aware of their sinfulness (Pause).

We pray for all those who are not aware of their sinfulness. May they repent and be converted and live with the Lord as his friends that he loves. Lord, hear us

3. For joy in the gift of forgiveness (Pause).

As we have been forgiven by God, may we be forgiving towards others; not bearing grudges for past mistakes and generous, like God, in forgiving offences in our families and communities. Lord, hear us.

4. For joy in God’s power to save (Pause)

Like the people in the gospel story, may we rejoice in God’s gift of wholeness and healing; and may we bring that healing to others by our forgiveness and acceptance of them. Lord, hear us.

5. For those who are sick (Pause).

May those who are sick be well again. We pray for Tom Hughes, Theresa Benson, Catherine Tomlin, Jim Walsh, Natasha Fitzpatrick, Francis Allen, Annie Nolan, Rose Wright, Philomena O’Hagan, Mark Turner, Freddie Fusco, Collin Lydon, Sean Connoly, Alice Mbeng Bessong, William Guckian, Nerville, Fred Osby-Darko, Pat Whitlock, Yris Alomajan, George Sidney Marks, Francis and Mary McGilligan, Maria Gordon, Micky Otoole, Chukuma Nwosu, Eileen Ruddy, Karen Kentish, Sharon McGilligan, Manuel Correia and Ricardo Feliciano. Lord, hear us.

6. For dead (Pause

May the dead rise to eternal life. We pray for Michael Murphy, Tony Fahy, Matthew O’Brien, Anna Dornan, John Clancy and Charles Keeley. Lord, hear us

Let us ask the prayer of Mary who was without sin: Hail Mary…

Let us pray for a moment in silence, asking God for his forgiving love.

Priest;

Father, you reconcile us to yourself through your Son Jesus Christ. As we share this Eucharist together, we associate ourselves with him and with each other, begging pardon from those we have offended. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.

Amen

APRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

Priest

V”Be cured.” Jesus word of healing to the leper brings consolation to all of us. Let us call upon Jesus, who never refused to help, and ask him to help all those most in need in the world today.

1. For those on the margins of society (Pause)

We pray for those whom society rejects, especially in our country and community. May we be people of compassion reaching out to those whom society abandons. Lord, hear us.

2.For a desire to imitate Christ (Pause).

May we be followers of Jesus in how we live, careful to avoid hurting others by attitude that discriminate and language that offends. Lord, hear us

3. For a desire to be healers in society (Pause).

Jesus is our model of acceptance, of tolerance and healing. Like him, may we be healers in society accepting people who are different from ourselves in language, culture and faith. Lord, hear us.

4. For a desire to spread the good news (Pause)

All of us experience the healing love of God expressed in the care and concern of others. By what we profess and how we live, may we declare to others our faith in the good news of God’s love and acceptance for all people. Lord, hear us.

5. For a desire to be well again (Pause).

May those who are sick be well again. We pray for Tom Hughes, Theresa Benson, Catherine Tomlin, Jim Walsh, Natasha Fitzpatrick, Francis Allen, Annie Nolan, Rose Wright, Philomena O’Hagan, Mark Turner, Freddie Fusco, Collin Lydon, Sean Connoly, Alice Mbeng Bessong, William and Guckian, Nerville, Fred Osby-Darko, Pat Whitlock, Yris Alomajan, George Sidney Marks, Francis and Mary McGilligan, Maria Gordon, Micky Otoole, Chukuma Nwosu, Eileen Ruddy, Karen Kentish, Sharon McGilligan, Manuel Correia, Ricardo Feliciano and Charles Keeley. Lord, hear us.

6. For eternal life (Pause

May the dead rise to eternal life. We pray for Michael Murphy, Tony Fahy and all those who died recently. Lord, hear us

Let us ask Mary, the mother who suffered with her Son, to pray for all her suffering children. Hail Mary…

Let us listen in silence to those who cry for help.

Priest;

Lord God, you sent your Son to heal the wounds of the world. Look with pity on those who suffer today in so many different ways, and hear the prayers we make for them, through Christ our Lord.

Amen

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

Priest

V”I came to preach the good news.” We remember with gratitude all that God has done for us as we bring to his love the needs and concerns of the Church and of the world.

1. For God’s family (Pause)

We bring to his love the daily work of each member of Christ’s body; that in constant prayer we may learn God’s will and his way of doing things, till we work exclusively for his glory. Lord, hear us.

2.For forgiveness (Pause).

We bring to his love the mistakes, short-sightedness and arrogance of our world; that in Christ we may learn to respect one another and the treasures of the planet we inhabit. Lord, hear us

3. For those who suffer (Pause).

We bring to his love the wounded and the afraid, the despairing and the rejected; that they may find Christ suffering alongside them and allow him to restore them to full life. Lord, hear us.

4. For a purposeful life (Pause)

We bring to his love our busy concern with unimportant things; that in spending more time in Christ’s company we may learn to act and react with the character of Jesus. Lord, hear us.

5. For the sick (Pause).

We bring to his love those who are sick that he will heal them. We pray for Tom Hughes, Theresa Benson, Catherine Tomlin, Jim Walsh, Natasha Fitzpatrick, Francis Allen, Annie Nolan, Rose Wright, Philomena O’Hagan, Mark Turner, Freddie Fusco, Collin Lydon, Sean Connoly, Alice Mbeng Bessong, William and Lorna Guckian, Nerville, Fred Osby-Darko, Pat Whitlock, Yris Alomajan, George Sidney Marks, Francis and Mary McGilligan, Maria Gordon, Micky Otoole, Chukuma Nwosu, Eileen Ruddy, Karen Kentish, Sharon McGilligan and manuel Correia. Lord, hear us.

6. For the dead (Pause

We bring to his love those who have died. We pray for Charles & Lilian Akerman and Lucien Israel. Lord, hear us

We seek the comfort of a mother’s help as we say: Hail Mary…

Now for a few moments we invite God into the secret of our lives that he may bring us peace.

Priest;

God the father, creator of heaven and earth, guide your people through the darkness of their lives to the peace which only you can bring. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
